Today, Ashley Wiggers is an adult and a successful published author, but as a child she struggled with learning and didn't understand why skills like reading were so much easier for her friends. Her mother Debbie Strayer, a former special ed teacher, recognized some of the signs that Ashley might have a learning disability, and found help to diagnose her visual processing disorder.

If you suspect your child has a learning disability: - Trust yourself. No one knows your child better than you do. - Look for help in identifying the problem but don't rely on someone with credentials to tell you about your own child. Create an environment where your child can be successful. - Remember no two children are alike, even within the same family; don't compare. - Your child's progress can only be compared to your child - not to anyone else. - Focus on learning as a continuum, not based on grade level but on progress. - Teach kids that everyone has strengths and weaknesses. - Encourage your child; don't give them a "label" or tell them what they can't do. - Teach kids to advocate for themselves. - Create compassion among siblings; have them practice identifying great qualities in each other.
